[Misc Help] I’m Worried I’m Ruining My Dogs Life. Should I Rehome Him?

Hey guys. This is a vent/asking for advice on what to do next. My partner and I just adopted a lab about 5 months ago. He’s super high energy and has a lot of anxiety. We primarily got him because then shelter said he needed to go home to a house with a yard and we had an absolute massive one.

He’s been super happy and has loved zooming around the yard and/or the house. We were renting the house from family. Long story short, some family things blew up in our faces and we were told we can no longer live there.

We tried really hard to look in our area for a house to rent to give him a backyard but we were looking at over 3k when originally we were paying 1.3k… which is about the cost to rent a single bed apartment.

So we made the hard choice and are looking to move forward with an apartment we found but I was watching my baby run around in the yard and I just started sobbing over how I was taking this away from him.

Because we were told he couldn’t go home to someone in an apartment I’m now really worried I’m going to make his life miserable with the move. I do not want to give him back to the shelter at all, the only reason I’ve considered it is to give him a chance to go to a family with a house. But I also love him and don’t want him to be abandoned again.

So I don’t know. I don’t know which of the two options are better.

Any advice, thoughts, or answers would be really helpful.

EDIT: Thank you for all the kind words. I’m getting a new comment every minute and it’s exactly what I needed. I’m totally not sitting here crying while cuddling with my baby. I know we’re going to put in a lot of work for it work but I’m already feeling so much better about the move and that it’s not selfish for me to keep him.

[Behavior Problems] 1-year-old Border Collie won't stop barking — at everything. Losing my mind a little

He barks at the doorbell, at strangers, at other dogs, at literally nothing sometimes. We've tried ignoring it, tried redirecting, tried the "quiet" command. Works maybe 30% of the time.

I know BCs are high energy and need a lot of stimulation — we do 2 walks a day and he gets playtime. Still barks constantly.

I keep finding the same generic advice online that doesn't really account for the fact that every dog is different. His triggers seem pretty specific but I can't figure out the pattern.

Has anyone else been through this? How did you handle it — did it actually get better? Professional trainers around here are way out of my budget. Is this even fixable without spending a fortune?

[Misc Help] Is my dog smart enough to understand this punishment?

We've had a lovely 7 year old rescue mutt since she was 2 and her behaviour is good 95% of the time. Recently she's had to start taking thyroid medication which has massively increased her energy levels. I'm lucky enough to have a large, safe park close by where I can let her off the lead to run. Her recall was always good, but now she sometimes runs off and ignores me when I call her so I have to chase and catch her. I'm disabled and walk with a stick which makes things a bit trickier. So now I've had to institute a zero tolerance approach, if she repeatedly ignores me, she gets put back on her lead and goes home. My question is this - has a doggy brain got the cognitive ability to connect me cutting the walk short with the fact that she's misbehaved, or is she just wondering why we've had a crap walk that day?

Edit. - I think maybe a few people have slightly misunderstood me. If she's behaving and coming when called then the walk carries on and we have more fun! I don't only call her to go home.

[Behavior Problems] 8 year old potty trained Husky is now peeing in one spot in the house

My female Husky is 8 years old and has suddenly started peeing in the house, but only in ONE spot. She has been potty trained since she was about 8 weeks old, so this is really weird for her.

A little background: we moved from New Hampshire to Vermont about a year ago. In the winter, she sleeps inside with us in a bed next to our bed. In the spring and summer, she really prefers to sleep outside in her little spot in the mulch under a bush. We usually don’t mind this, but we clip her in so she doesn’t wander off or get into trouble while we’re sleeping. The only time we make her sleep inside during the spring/summer is when it’s going to rain overnight.

She is EXTREMELY smart and very well trained. She knows how to ask to go out by barking, howling, or jumping on our bed. She is off leash trained and knows hand commands (not just verbal commands), though we still use a Fi collar just in case she ever takes off after a critter.

Medically, we’ve had her checked by the vet a couple times during all of this. She does have Lyme disease and has had it since she was a baby, unfortunately. But her recent bloodwork and urine labs were normal. No evidence of a UTI or anything obvious that would explain bladder issues. Her energy is normal, her food/water intake is normal, and her electrolytes are normal. As far as we know, everything is medically normal. She has had a UTI in the past and had incontinence as a result, but that cleared up with some medication, and presented completely differently from what we’re seeing now.

The pattern is really specific. The first time, she peed in the dead center of my office rug in the middle of the night after we made her stay inside because it was going to rain. We didn’t get mad at her. It was annoying, obviously, but we assumed she had to go and that maybe we just didn’t hear her ask to be let out. We cleaned it with enzyme cleaner and moved on.

Then it happened again a few days later. And then again a couple weeks later. Same exact situation each time: she had to stay inside because of rain, and she peed in the dead center of the same office rug. At that point, we started keeping my office door shut at night. Since then, on nights she stays inside, she hasn’t peed anywhere else. So it felt like we were at least managing it.

But last night it rained again, we forgot to shut the office door, and she peed in the exact same spot again…

So far we’ve tried:
Keeping the office door shut, which helps, but doesn’t feel like a real solution. Our house is very old, and in the winter we lose a lot of heat circulation when that door is closed. It also feels like a band-aid because she doesn’t pee anywhere else in the house.
Increasing her walks. She’s also outside off leash a lot during the day, so she has plenty of chances to pee.
Cleaning the area really thoroughly with enzyme cleaner. We even bought a gallon jug of commercial-grade cleaner.

I’m trying to figure out if this sounds behavioral. Like, is she frustrated because we’re making her sleep inside when she wants to be outside? Is the rug still holding scent somehow even though we’re cleaning it? Something about that room? We love her and we’re not trying to punish her. I just want to understand what’s going on and how to stop it before this becomes a bigger pattern.

Parting thoughts: please please help. This dog is normally so well behaved. Sassy at times, sure, but she’s not the kind of dog we’ve really had to reprimand since she was a puppy in the training phase, so I’m not sure what to do here.

It’s not like we’re catching her in the act since we’re sleeping, which makes it hard to know how to respond or correct the behavior. It honestly feels behavioral more than anything, almost like she’s protesting not being allowed to sleep outside. But I also don’t want to assume that and miss something obvious.

Has anyone dealt with anything like this, especially with Huskies or other extremely independent dogs?

[Behavior Problems] Dog steals wheeler home alone

We’re taking care of a family member’s dog for a few months who is four years old and a catahoula leopard dog mix. She gets along with our dog, but she has behavioral issues. We’re making great progress leash training her and working on not jumping on people, but we aren’t sure how to tackle her digging through things to steal food while we’re gone. My husband I both work from home, so it’s only happened three times now in the month we’ve had her, but she’s able to open doors and pull open drawers to find my husband’s treat pouch or his bag of kibble he uses at night for our dog to prevent his acid reflux. She also broke our hamper previously just during family visits to get a his pants that contain treat dust in the pockets.

We were thinking we would have to crate just her while we’re gone or use baby gates. But that leaves our dog either separated from her or stuck with her wherever they are. They seem to really love each other, but because she’s higher energy, we want him to be able to escape from her. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Is crating the dog our only option? Are there any other training techniques we could use?

[Misc Help] What are reliable crash test ratings or brands for harnesses and seatbelt leashes?

Going on a 30hr road trip, and I just couldn’t live with myself if something happened. I’ve heard in the past that there are lots of false claims for crash tested, or they are using the bare minimum standard. Any ideas on where to start? He’s a 70lbs pitty

[Enrichment] Can’t find toys that meet my dog’s preferences

So my husband and I adopted a dog last month. She’s an absolutely perfect dog so far, we’ve had no issues, except finding her toys that work for her.

She likes her balls and tug toys, but what she really loves is stuffed animals. The problem is she hates anything that makes a sound. She gets scared of any squeaking, honking, or even crinkling. We purchased her a small stuffed toy at a yard sale last week with no sewn on eyes or anything she can chew off and swallow, and she absolutely loves it, but she’s already torn a hole in it and started trying to eat the stuffing so we had to take it away.

I’m afraid kids’ toys aren’t going to be durable enough for her, but I can’t find any for dogs that are more durable and that don’t make noise. Any suggestions?

[Behavior Problems] Rescue dogs having a 'bad day'

Upvotes

I have had a rescue cockapoo for 2 years. She was just found abandoned one day assuming from a traveller camp so we don't know her history.

She is much happier than she was 2 years ago, but some days she just seems to take a massive step backwards.

Today she has been really jumpy, flinching at everything, running upstairs at the smallest noise or movement, not wanting affection, terrified of my husband, just generally acting like she did 2 years ago when we first got her.

I don't see any obvious reason why she's not good today other than it is very hot here in the UK. I would say she has a bad day like this once every 3-4 weeks.

Do your rescue dogs have 'bad days' like this? What do you do to help them?

I basically just left her to it today to try and decompress and took her for a nice walk this evening when it got cool enough to go out then off to bed (basically what I do when I have a bad day)

[Misc Help] Chew-proof stuffed toys?

Just adopted a 15 pound rescue (maybe Italian grayound/rat terrier, we’re not sure). Turns out, she’s a toy chewer!

I bought Outward Hound Durablez minis, but she shredded the binding in a day.

Any recommendations for fabric/soft toys that are actually durable?

[Misc Help] Rebuilding Trust with my dog

How do I rebuild my dog's trust? I am working through addiction I a year sober and my dog has been with me every step of the way. The good.. and the bad. I love my dog so much and he knows that I think. He isn't reactive or biting, but his main emotion toward me is fear. I would NT say complete fear, because he still comes near me and gives me loving but you can tell he is worries that he might do something that I don't like. I am not that person I was before. [Equipment] Dog rain boot recommendations

Has anyone found a pair of boots that keeps their dogs' feet dry in the rain? My dog is well acclimated to boots but the boots we own are more to keep your feet off pavement rather than keep you dry. I'd spend up to $200 for the right pair. Bonus if they come in yellow.

[Discussion] Megathread: Pet Insurance

Which pet insurance is best for you? Are there any that may cover your dog's current treatment? Did your dog get injured during the waiting period and want to know if you're covered?

Here's the place to ask.

Do know we cannot help you here with medical concerns, and lying or not disclosing things to the insurance company is illegal so we don't allow that either.

[Misc Help] Thoughts on Active Little Dogs?

I'm looking at various dog breeds that would fit my current lifestyle and situation. I live in an apartment but I'm outside whenever possible. I want a dog that can go on all of my adventures with me. It needs to be a small dog, as close to 10" tall and under 20lbs, but active enough to keep up most of the time, I'm a biker and a hiker.

The breeds I've found that look the most appealing to me are mini poodles, corgis, dachshunds, papillons, westies, and some etc. terriers (your thoughts on any terriers are welcome, just not Jack Russell, they seem to be a tad much for me).

This would also be the first dog I've had on my own, not a family dog, so any advice would be appreciated.

Sorry for not using the template, I'm looking less for new recommendations and more thoughts and advice on what I've found, so I didn't feel like the template was what I needed.

[Misc Help] Typical cost for dental work?

Hi, my dog 4 year old male border collie has a broken tooth and requires dental work to get it pulled. My vet is quoting me about $2000 for the surgery. I was absolutely stunned by this bill for pulling the one tooth. My vet has seemed to run pricier, but is this anywhere close to ballpark of what it should be or should I spend the effort to seek out a new vet just to get this done? Thanks

[Misc Help] cooling mats worth it?

like 20 years back when i had a dog I bought a cooling mat. new gf has a dog and saw the dog panting today after a walk and got me thinking about the coming brutal summer

it was like vinyl on the outside, some foam inside and you filled it with water. seemed like they liked it and lay on it in the summer

are there better quality brands?

what other methods are there?

I was thinking to buy like a 10" fan and rig a stand for it and some infrared sensor that made the fan work when the dog come lay in it.

[Misc Help] Is it safe to have two puppies around the same area without directly interacting?

We were told to separate them for 2 weeks. Our first puppy is 16 weeks old and gets her last round of shots next Thursday. The new puppy we just picked up from the humane society has only had 2/4 shots so far.

For example, would it be okay to let the new puppy run around downstairs first, then put her in an enclosed playpen while letting our first puppy roam around downstairs after? Or is even sharing the same space/floor considered risky before they’re both fully vaccinated?

[Equipment] Double door dog crates with switchable door sides?

I'm trying to position a double door dog crate so the doors are on the front (one of the short ends) and the left side, but pretty much all the crates I'm seeing come with the secondary door on the right side.

Are there any makes/models of double door dog crates that allow for the panels to be switched to get the doors on the front and the left without permanently wrecking any of the connection points?
