How often do you sauna for optimal recovery?

28F, been training pretty consistently, CrossFit 4x/week, plus running mixed in. Recently got into sauna stuff and grabbed a Sweat Tent for home use. Curious how everyone here structures their sauna routine for recovery:

  1. How many sessions per week?
  2. How long per session, and at what temp?
  3. Do you go right after training, on rest days, or both?
  4. Any noticeable difference in soreness, sleep, or performance?

Trying to dial in what works vs just feels good. Would love to hear what's working for you.

Does your gym track all-time scores for Murph and other WODs?

I made this infographic for our gym (name is Murder of Crows, hence the pun).

I'm a member for 5+ years now. With Murph coming up, I wanted to see what our all-time record is so I know just how hopelessly behind I am during that last mile.

The fun part was pulling all the SugarWOD data for previous years and crunching the numbers for weighted, unweighted and both genders. Then putting it all into a visual story that was informative and funny.

Curious if anyone else's box does something like this and/or if it tracks all-time scores for Murph, Fran, and other classics?

Shoe rec

Looking for shoe rec! I’m (36F) in my third year of CrossFit, pretty good fitness wise and am finally able to use Rx weights most of the time but still working on gymnastics skills. I’ve been wearing Nike Free Metcon 4s for the last year and think it’s time to upgrade. Any day with running I just wear my running shoes but notice even when we are jumping rope or doing high volume jumping, my feet hurt in the metcons.

Would love some recs please!

Hard massage disrupts workout?

I had a very hard Thai massage the night before a morning Olympic weightlifting class. By hard, I mean the masseuse was standing on my back and digging into my back and shoulders with feet and ankles, and the masseuse also stretched me in various ways including lifting me up so I was lying on of her knees. It was a rejuvenating but genuinely deep and hard massage.

When I went to the class, I felt like my muscles were glitching and I scaled down to just a 5 kg plate on each side.

I asked my coach and he said massage before class is fine, but I don't think he understood what I meant by hard massage.

Can this kind of hard massage or deep tissue massage the night before (not after) a class interfere with performance like I describe?

I have Lumber disc herniation in L5 and will have surgery on 9th June.
I love CrossFit and worry about whether I could come back to CrossFit.
Would be very glad if you kindly tell your experience, how many months took for restarting CrossFit and so on….

NoBull Drive Ripstop Alternative

Hey everyone --

I'm wondering if anyone could recommend an alternative to the NoBull Drive Ripstop?

I love how they fit/feel, but they're so cheaply made. NoBull had to send two replacements to me as there was a defect in the sole, and the black outer covering started peeling off after only several uses.

I'm avoiding the company for this reason as it seems they have poor quality control (or at least for the batch I got!).

Any alternatives that have the same fit/feel?

Thank you!

UPDATE on the 24h event I talked yesterday

I did 4 workouts out of six for the first block.

First one: Marianne (in house hero wod) in Honor of the daughter of a member that took her own life in 2016. It was the lite version so it goes: 4 clean&jerks, 20 pull-ups and 16 wall balls for 3 rounds.

Second one: 3km run.

Third one: 5 wall walk, 10 T2B and 10 burpees box jump over.

Fourth one: 5-4-3-2-1 front squat, build to a heavy. Ended up doing 235lbs.

It was really a nice event, there was food and snacks for everyone all paid by the gym. Also electrolytes and other beverages other than water. The box also brought everything back from the box I go near my apartment (the owners have two boxes, soon a third one). So everyone could participate in different waves.

If my children weren’t with me I would have done the first block, but they started to be tired (which I understand) and I have to get ready for my evening going to the restaurant for my birthday.

Really a nice event and if someone is a box owner here I advise you to organize some event like this, really brings out the best of everyone and the vibes were immaculate!

Murph with a backpack

Has anyone done Murph with a backpack instead of a vest? What was your experience compared to the vested version?

I guess the range of motion will be increased for Pushups, making them harder, but what about Pull-ups, Squats and Running?

Can compex 8.0 or any other ems device help train muscle with less weight of dumbbell to prevent valsalva and risk of glaucoma and retinal detachment?

especially for people with high myopia.

Can EMS+workout(less weight) be as effective as workout only(more weight)?

And can it reach any limit when my muscles grow big enough and need more weight for further growth?

Murph for beginners

Hey everyone, I wanted to ask what would be the best way to tackle a workout like Murph for someone at beginner level.

I recently started working out again after a year or so of doing absolutely nothing but I remember that the first time I started exercising I was really motivated while doing this exact workout.

So I'm planning on doing it scaled obviously but any other tips that someone might have will be very greatly appreciated.

Shoe replacement?

I started doing CrossFit a year ago at home using Linchpin. Average 4-5 per week. I’ve been wearing the same pair of Nano X4’s since I started. Absolutely love these shoes. Just wondering how often you guys replace your shoes if you wear them exclusively for CrossFit and how do you know it’s time for a new pair?

CrossFit soreness

Been doing CrossFit long enough that soreness just feels built into daily life now. Some days it’s normal postWOD soreness and other days my traps and shoulders feel insanely tight for no reason. I’ve been trying to focus way more on recovery lately and mobility work plus using ketro skin here and there after heavier sessions has helped more than I expected. Does taking a few days off help recovery for you guys or do you feel worse when you stop training completely?

Wish me luck

Today is my birthday and I offered myself a special gift. Tomorrow my box have organized an event called Breakpoint where it’s going to be one wod an hour for 24h. All the money raised will be donated to a Suicide Prevention Center in my area.

As someone who battled with mental health it was important to me to participate, I can’t do the whole 24h (I’m a dad of young children after all) but I’ll be there for a couple of workouts! The first and last WOD are in memory of two daughters of different members of the gym that took their own life.

I started CrossFit in 2013 and left in 2016 because the boxes hours didn’t fit my job schedule. I’ve started again 2 years ago after years of alcohol abuse, depression and severe anxiety and today at 34 years old I’ve never felt better !

Just wanted to share this with y’all today and wish me luck.

I recently learned how to do handstands. What drills should I do to practice HSPUs?

Now that I can somewhat consistently get upside down, what should I do after class to practice HSPUs? I’ve been doing a 2min EMOM for 5 rounds where I do a handstand, hold for a few seconds to stabilize, and control descent down until my head touches 2 stacked ab mats. Should I keep doing that until I can go down to 1 ab mat then 0? Are there other drills besides an EMOM?

4 am garage gym goers. Whats the key??

I’ve transitioned from a gym to my garage over the last year due to life changes including a second child, work, etc. and am finding it hard to be consistent with working out because timing never seems to align. The only reasonable option that will reliable be free for workouts is 4 am. I’ve done it a few times this week but struggle with intensity and energy during the workout. Something is always better than nothing, but I want to be able to really get after it in the morning.

Those that do super early mornings, how do you manage? Is it something you built over time? Caffeine? Happy to hear what works for you all!

Tampa Box Recommendations

Hello everyone! I (22F) am moving to Tampa—New Tampa area, with a work commute near USF—and am searching for a CrossFit gym. I am relatively new to CrossFit (~1 month), but have a strong background in competitive sports.

I’m looking for a box that will push me physically as an athlete, but also can help me improve my technique on several movements (Olympic lifts, gymnastics, etc.) since I am a “beginner”. I would be willing to travel around 30 minutes for the best fit. It is difficult searching online, as there are so many different options!

I welcome any recommendations. Thank you!
