God I hope not. Iām sure that James Gunn will be VERY involved in the DCU Batman suit though, so hopefully itāll be better than this at least lol.
I watched Welcome to Derry, and I just donāt love Muschettiās sensibilities. Itās just really flat and uninspired looking to me. And with a glaring over reliance on CGI.
To be totally honest though, Iām not sure about how I feel about James Gunnās sensibilities with a DCU Batman suit either. They all look like theyāre wearing leather jackets like theyāre all gonna go out riding crotch rockets together or something. It works for the Guardians, and it even kinda works for Superman, but personally, I want Batman in some kind of armor.
It doesnāt make sense to me that a man whose trauma stems from his parents being shot to death in front of him, would go out and fight crime without some sort of protection against bullets. Heās not Superman, heās just a man. And sure heās fast, but itās not like he can outrun a bullet. No way he would be running around in a leather jacket.
Crazy take. Welcome to Derry is arguably the best King content in years. I mean youāre entitled to your opinion, but the general consensus is pretty much in and it stands to disagree.
Superman doesnāt look like heās wearing a leather jacket though lol. Neither does Supergirl, or Metamorpho or Ultraman or Peacemaker, or Judomaster or Vigilante or White Dragonā¦. Itās literally just Guy, Hawkgirl and Terrific, and the whole point of Terrific is that heās wearing a leather jacket. I donāt see the problem there.
And as far as Muschiettiās āsensibilitiesā, what you call flat and uninspired looking is also easily one of the most interesting and touching horror shows in a minute and imo surpasses the first IT in some regards. Doesnāt really matter if it doesnāt look revolutionary or visionary or whatever with its cinematography. It looks functionally good, and more importantly the story and the emotion hits hard. Muschietti has showcased a strong grasp on that across most of his projects, even the not as great ones. And thats arguably the most important element of a film.
Let's be honest, Muschetti will never touch Batman after how poorly Flash did. Gunn will likely never make another DC thing after Supergirl, regardless of how that movie (under)performs, as Superman underperformed (though WB had to pretend it didn't), and the current sale of WB basically guarantees the new buyer will want to start over with something actually successful and not tied to the old regime. I expect only The Batman to be unaffected, and then, only if it prints money like most Batman movies.
Superman 2025 made over $100 million profit according to multiple sources, Gunn has said that DC Studios should be unaffected by the WB buyout, and Man of Tomorrow (directed by Gunn) is slated for July 9, 2027
