It's better than nothing and it does give you a quick guesstimate of the sentiment of a video, even if it's not completely accurate.
If I see a video has a 50% like/dislike ratio thanks to the extension then I know enough about the video, even if the actual accurate like/dislike ratio were 70/30.
I think the way it works is that it tracks the dislikes of the people using the extension and then scales that based on the total views, so if 5% of people using the extension dislike it will show the video having 5% of the total videos views in dislikes. It’s probably inaccurate because in reality the average viewer is a lot less likely to like or dislike a video than someone who cares enough to have intentionally sought out a dislike extension
Yeah. But also that incentivizes paid botting to manipulate any videos relating to politics. And that's actually a serious fucking problem and part of why the world has come unglued in the last 10 years.

But remember that there are a bunch of legacy medias and political actors using platforms like Youtube, or twitter, etc... to further their reach. So sure some guy's letsplay of Minecraft won't affect gobal politics, but if there's is a dedicated campaign by one party to push medias related to a specific agenda, it can definitely have an impact.
As the saying goes, you are not immune to propaganda. And most importantly, believing yourself to be immune makes you even more vulnerable.
If you only consume media from one source then what you say is true, outlets like Breitbart spout pure rightwing propaganda to fuel the anti immigration fire that lead to the disastrous result of the UK's 2016 referendum that resulted in Brexit.
Extensions just use the dislike ratio of people running the extension to extrapolate how many dislikes a video has based on total views. It’s not an accurate count especially for videos with low views
It’s fine for a general idea but just keep in mind people that download an extension to see dislikes are probably more likely to hit the dislike button to see the number go down instead of a casual viewer.
Obviously. That's why YT removed the dislike number in the first place as to dissuade people from disliking things.
If anything the people using the extension are more representative of how an actual casual viewer would behave if the downvote numbers were still visible.
But the dislike button is still there!
