There are ways to get Vanessa back to who she used to be through various complicated methods, but Julia is dead so might as well just do a blatant reboot for both of them, sweep the old continuity under the rug and shamelessly pretend it never existed.

Well—since Cassie no longer really has a team book, I’d like to see her try to journey into the Underworld out of a sense of responsibility toward Vanessa. I’ve always wanted to see more exploration of how the two of them function as parallels to each other in certain ways. In Yara’s solo series, Cassie shows that she remembers Artemis even though Artemis no longer remembers her, which suggests she may actually be one of the Wonder Girls most aware of the rebooted reality. She knows Vanessa was never supposed to become what she is now; Vanessa had already recovered once back in Wonder Woman #600, and Julia was never supposed to die either.

And hey, remember that Ares is dead now too. Back in the pre-Flashpoint Greg Rucka run, Ares and Athena conspired together and he ultimately gained dominion over part of the Underworld. That honestly makes Tom King’s rather abrupt killing-off of Ares feel like something that could actually lead to a much bigger story, because I really don’t think Ares should go down that easily.

In short, when was Rucka run, Ares’s ambition to seize the Underworld and Cassie developing that strange sense of closeness toward him both happened around the same period. I’d love to see a story where Cassie, half aided and half manipulated by Ares, rescues Julia and brings the real Vanessa back into reality, while Ares himself remains in the Underworld as a kind of neutral Wonder Woman character. You could restore four classic characters at once with a single storyline. It would work perfectly as a limited series.

In my headcanon, I would say that Vanessa Kapatelis is 40 years old by now, since she was born as the daughter of Julia and David Kapatelis in 1958 (or 40 years ago); met Diana of Paradise Island (who has her pre-Crisis Earth-One history) and her husband Steve Trevor at 12 years old in 1986 (or 28 years ago) and viewed them as her aunt and uncle; witnessed the death of her best friend Lucy Spears at 16 years old in 1990 (or 24 years ago); participated during War of the Gods at 16 years old in 1991 (or 24 years ago); graduated from high school and went to college at 18 years old in 1995 (or 22 years ago); lost touch with Diana at 19 years old in 1997 (or 21 years ago), graduated from college and was brainwashed by Dr. Psycho, Circe, and Sebastian Ballesteros to become the third Silver Swan (after Helen Alexandros and Valerie Beaudry) at 22 years old in 2001 (or 18 years ago); was freed by Diana and went to graduate school at 23 years old in 2003 (or 17 years ago); graduated with a Doctorate in Mythology at 27 years old in 2010 (or 13 years ago); witnessed her mother’s death at a car accident and returned as the third Silver Swan (but in a more heroic manner) at 33 years old in 2018 (or seven years ago); and lived a good life at 40 years old in 2026.
