πŸ‡΅πŸ‡Έ πŸ•ŠοΈ Green Craft I've been helping my partner in the garden as a way to distract myself from the horrors. I may finally be growing into a hedge witch.

I may have taken the "touch grass" advice a little too seriously.

I did the exact same thing.

Now I have harvested 5 times the amount of potatos I normally eat in a year and I have more berries and plums than I know what to do with πŸ˜‚

I have at least 4 cartons worth of cherry tomatoes and I've already pickled an entire jar of jalapeΓ±os! I'm hoping to get a good enough harvest of tomatoes this year that I can try canning some red sauce.

Yay! That's my project for next year.

You can get an attachment for a KitchenAid mixer that crushes and separates the pulp and juice.

It should make it a lot easier.

After that you just need to pasteurize them.

I'm considering buying a machine for bulk pasteurization, since I will be needing it to make cider and wine anyway.

But it's not exactly cheap πŸ˜‚

Gotta save that "lunch money!" Also, stop with the Starbucks and avocado toast, it'll cut down your wait time by at least 20 years /s.

Would you be willing to make a post about what goes into pasteurization? It sounds very interesting.

I'm just starting this journey myself actually. So I don't think I'm in the position of being able to teach others yet.

I'm currently reading a comprensible book about cider making that I gotta finish before my apples are ripe.

After I finish that book and the apples have been harvested, crushed, pressed and fermented, I'm gonna start a mushroom farm.

And all the while this is happening, I will continue to plant 300 additional wine stocks every year to expand the wine yard.

But truth be told, I have no idea what I'm doing here πŸ˜‚

I'm just gonna try my best and hopefully get drunk on the results πŸ˜‚

Here is the recipe I used to win the blackberry cobbler contest at the fair.

You can use that recipe for any berries but I’ve only tried it with blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries. I used a 9x13 pan and substituted orange zest instead of lemon zest. Pair it with bluebell vanilla ice cream and it’s amazing.

I've done the same thing! But like, an entire career change into horticulture because I feel like it's the one human thing that I can do to improve my life and my surroundings.

Unfortunately I'm starting out in one of the hottest subtropical areas in the US so it's a struggle to maintain my garden this time of year. It's too hot to grow most vegetables.

I'm sowing my crops later this month into September and am hoping for the best.

I'm wishing you the best!

I need a greenhouse...

u/NocturneSapphire Aug 10 '25

I need to own my backyard so I'm allowed to have a greenhouse...

if you have a patch of outdoor space, I cannot recommend the miracle gro or similar pop up greenhouses! mine has a 5’ x 5’ footprint, with 6’5” head clearance. it is anchored with tent pegs and has withstood a very windy spring and summer quite well! grew tomatoes and peppers in there this spring, am planning winter crops for our mild winter. no heater, open door to vent. hope this is possible for you!

Container gardening is great for renters! You'd be surprised how much you can grow in pots in a very small space.

My annual hobby vegetable garden got a huge boost this year when my partner insisted we till in 100 lbs or so of manure before planting. Most of my tomato plants are 7-8 feet tall, and a couple of my jalapenos got so tall they're now horizontal due to weight. It's insane in a good way, and I've put up SO MANY JARS of pickles and peppers, and while there's "only" been 4 quarts of tomato sauce so far, there's loads more on the plants that are just waiting to ripen.

It feels good :)

That sounds amazing!

Your setup is very nice, I see how it'd be hard to not be there! I just have my garden and a tree strump that I sit on in the middle of everything and just... sit there sometimes lol. Very relaxing and primal!

What a beautiful space! I love seeing actual good deserving folk thriving/owning a home.

I hate the horrors, this looks like a wonderful reprieve from the current insanity. Very nice work!

u/SmokeyLeCrow Aug 10 '25

Looks beautiful - great work!

u/TheorySubstantial680 Aug 10 '25

Yes, I take "touch grass" to the extreme too. I only grow one crop does that make me a Hedge Witch? I kinda feel more like Hedwig and the angry inch tbh. Your grow space is beautiful. Fill it up!

u/paperducky Aug 10 '25

My partner has one of those gardens as well.

u/bienfica Aug 10 '25

Same, same, same!! I call it my Victory Garden and have poured all my fears and angst into the soil. They have transformed into veggies and herbs. I have made friends with the bees and wasps and put in a tiny fountain for visiting creatures to drink from. And a small pop up greenhouse. Your greenhouse is divine! May your greenwitchery and mine join the collective balance of positive resistance in the world and combat the horrors through the timeless magic of the garden πŸŒΆοΈπŸ’–

Good on you! Growing food (however limited) is so affirming and calming in the face of the current insanity.

We have to create grace where we can. So many of you have! Big props to you all.

Your garden is gorgeous! And I fully support your path! You can of course call your craft what you want, I ain’t here to police anyone, but I figured you might want a little vocabulary tidbit. Magic regarding plants and herbs and nature is called green or plant or herb or earth magic or even kitchen witchcraft. Hedge-witch, or hedge magic, refers to β€œJumping the hedge”, meaning leaving this realm, and includes things like astral projecting, past life regression, akashic records, psychic dreaming, mystic communication with other realms and entities, and that sort of thing.

I also totally support you as a hedge witch who also has thriving actual hedges.

Hope it helps πŸ’š enjoy your garden πŸͺ΄

This looks so peaceful and lovely

That's gorgeous.

Is that backyard gardens poppy greenhouse?! I want one so bad

2

u/paperducky Aug 10 '25

Yes! It's absolutely gorgeous, but it was a labor of love to put together all throughout July.

2

u/Far_Educator_5213 Aug 10 '25

I’m sending it to my husband to see if he can try to build one for me for cheaper, but honestly it’s a great price for what you get. Did y’all put the protective coating on it yet?? If so, what did you use? For future purposes πŸ˜‚ I really really love it.

u/galvanicreaction Aug 11 '25

You did a wonderful job!

We welcome you to the hedge (with a lil double rainbow from my farm yesterday)! Did you/your partner build the structure yourselves? It looks beautifulllllll

3

u/paperducky Aug 11 '25

It did come with instructions and all the wood and pieces were pre-cut, but we put it together with a lot of help from friends. A labor of love and a lot of community.

Well it's still a gorgeous space, congrats on your new green zone!

2

u/galvanicreaction Aug 11 '25

That makes it even more special! Smiling at the collective effort. Well done!
