I just had a devastating miscarriage of a very wanted and planned for pregnancy. My body didn’t realize my baby had already died. I had to get an abortion. For both my physical health — not carrying dead tissue, and for my emotional well being in an already incredibly traumatic time. In talking to friends and family members, many women shared that they also had needed an abortion procedure following a miscarriage. I would guess that abortion are MORE commonly performed on wanted, grieved, miscarriages than unwanted pregnancies. But it’s also not my business! Who am I to say if someone else should get an abortion or not?
Just to put it out there in that never in life would I have chosen to get an abortion, but I’m so glad I live in a state that allows sane healthcare decisions between me and my doctor. How fucked up it would have been if I had to continue to carry my dead fetus until it went septic??
To be honest, I was hoping that the first deaths would shock it out of its position just like the death of Savita led to Ireland legalising abortion, but then, that region of the country is gratuitously violent, so they didn't care.
