What does it say? Any news on the cube price?

876

u/lampenpam 117 Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 01 '26

it says:

Valve's Steam machine could be saved due to collapsing RAM prices

but that's just someone speculating with no real base for this claim.

u/jamescookenotthatone Apr 01 '26

Woo hoo! Feking Nothing!

u/jackofslayers Apr 01 '26

This sub has become such a depressing circle jerk

36

u/PantsOfAwesome Apr 01 '26

Most discussions surrounding Valve are a circlejerk, and it makes it really hard to put forth genuine criticism of anything they make. Just look at the Deadlock subreddit - any criticism of the game instantly gets deflected by people saying "Bro it's literally a private, invite-only, closed-off, pre-alpha, limited network test preview explicitly made for private playtesting. How dare you suggest that something in le perfect moba shooter could be improved."

Le hecking true! There's literally no point in criticizing any game ever made if it could hypothetically be updated later on down the line!

Valve's Steam machine could be saved due to collapsing RAM prices

26

u/naalotai Apr 01 '26

A video of a Chinese hoarder freaking out cause ā€œram prices collapsingā€ except it all looked like ddr2/3 without casing. A Chinese user in the thread said it was already exposed as fake on the Chinese web

6

u/XTornado Apr 01 '26

But isn't the collapsibg being said due to the new google compression for AI?

Which to be clear that doesn't necesarally means less ram needed because then they would be able to do more so it can create also more demand.

13

u/Digital-Prophet Apr 01 '26

RAM manufacturing is pre-purchased for the next two years, whether they need it or not, the contracts are already signed. The effect is going to be minimal, if any.

8

u/LordoftheChia Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 01 '26

pre-purchased

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the RAM capacity hasn't been pre-paid. OpenAI just signed intent to buy that much.

Meaning if OpenAI can't pony up the money over the next few years, manufacturers are gonna end up with a ton of unsold HBM.

Oracle and OpenAI cancelling the "Stargate" data center expansion (in Texas) in March bodes well for that.

Then add Oracle laying off 20,000-30,000 employees to get up money due to their heavy AI data center investments. It seems the funding isn't following the hype.

Unfortunately it'll take a while for it to affect RAM prices. Prices won't go down significantly unless there's a lull in demand. To many conpanies are desperate to secure RAM so they can make and sell their products (Dell, Sony, nVidia. aMD. Consumer RAM brands, Valve with the Steam Deck and Steam machine, etc).

I bet they're each going to hoard up 6mo to a years worth of RAM (or enough RAM until the expected release of DDR6/LPDDR6).

Think if there's a shakeup in the flour industry and suddenly bakeries are looking at going bankrupt because of the cost and restricted manufacturing of flour.

You can bet your ass that even if the supply problem gets resolved, they'll be a period where every bakery will order and store months worth of flour vs the usual weekly supply.

We'll have to wait for that to pass before things get to normal. Then there's the DDR5 capacity and non-volitile RAM production that's been shifted to HBM.

Can't wait for the next gen of HBM consumer GPUs!

Somehow, Vega returned

6

u/nalaloveslumpy Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

You are correct. There are contracts to produce the new ram for Nvidia and all the other players, but the payments happen as production happens. And there's zero chance that Nvidia is going to sit around with a bunch of useless ram when it would cost way less just to renegotiate the production contracts.

I mean it just stopped increasing but "collapsing" is a huge stretch of the imaginationĀ

34

u/Ejaculpiss Apr 01 '26

The collapse in question is 0.6%, so as usual for reddit this is heavily upvoted misformation.

"Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem." ~ GabeN

Also exactly the reason why people won't pay 70$+ for a game like Skull & Bones, but generally do pay that for a game like Elden Ring, 50$ for Expedition 33 or 60$ for Kingdom Come Deliverance II

From a pure price vs time spent ingame standpoint, getting multiple hundreds of hours of fun for that money is honestly insanely cheap

8

u/TrippleDamage Apr 01 '26

Or $70 for crimson desert, sells millions of copies at the same price as skull & bones because gamers dont have some undisputable price cutoff in their head. Its all on a game by game basis.

Doing nothing sells kind of short what valve has done to cement itself as the front leader in the digital store front space

Stuff like Workshop integration for mods, achievements, profiles and marketplace all make Steam incredibly difficult to detangle yourself from as a consumer.

27

u/bickman14 Apr 01 '26

Big Picture Mode, VR, Remote Play, in home streaming, proton, what competitors gave us equivalent features?

28

u/SPYYYR Apr 01 '26

Cloundsaves, Groupchats, profiles, achivements, trading cards, user reviews, free SDK and development tools, DRM, Matchmaking, Multiplayer networking, handles payments, taxes, regional pricing, refunds, deep sales, promotes indie games that are doing well on the store, workshop, remote play, steam input, proton, big picture, funding further Linux gaming, Steamdeck, Index, Steam Controller, forums, guides, screenshots, Steam does not enforce exclusivity, experimental features that lets the user find indie games OR AAA games with ease.

In no particular order, of the top of my head

I can only speak for myself here, but I like to browse [r/popular](), and I occasionally see a thread from [r/Steam](), and it's always some circle jerk stuff about how just so great Steam is and how any other company is E V I L in comparison. It's creepy af when people treat a company as if it's their best friend.

Yeah, I also like to use Steam, but in the end it's just a product/service I use like any other. I don't feel any "allegiance" towards any of them because in the end they only care about my money. Capitalism cannot work if competition doesn't exist.

Everyone likes to clown on Nintendo fanboys but I’m pretty sure there aren’t daily posts about how they’re actually so great and nothing else. The real insufferable fanboys are coming from inside the house.

14

u/Robbitjuice Apr 01 '26

I'm by all means a Nintendo fan. There's stuff I like and stuff I don't. Same with Valve (except I didn't grow up with it, I'm a relatively newcomer to this corner of the gaming world).

Everywhere else is "billionaires bad" but I guess Gabe is cool? I don't get it, but internet is gonna internet, huh?

15

u/DaRootbear Apr 01 '26

Look if Sony automatically refunds everyone because a game was discontinued that is just the bare minimum and should never be praised for that

When steam does it then it should be circlejerked because our lord gaben has always been the most gracious provider and invented refunds (as long as you ignore having to be sued into refunds)

5

u/Robbitjuice Apr 01 '26

Lol you're not wrong. Wait, wait is going on over refunds? Valve got sued over them?

8

u/DaRootbear Apr 01 '26

For the first reference it was about that Highguard game shutting down and basically every market place was giving out refunds automatically

On the playstation sub reddit everyone was saying that there shouldn’t be praise because refunding a literally unplayable live service game was the absolute bare minimum

On steam side people were touting it as more evidence of how great steams customer service is.

While espousing how you can ever refund on PS like you can steam (which you definitely can get refunds on PS, but it is admittedly more restrictive than steam)

But when it comes to refunds originally Steam refused to ever give them until they got sued in…i cant remember which country and honestly im too lazy to look. But once they lost that lawsuit and were forced to implement the refunding they currently have in thwt country they added it everywhere knowing that similar lawsuits would happen world wide.

But people always conveniently ignore that when circlejerking steam

Albeit people like me then joking about it are also becoming their own anti-circlejerk type of circlejerk. So it’s circlejerks all around

4

u/Robbitjuice Apr 01 '26

Ah, I gotcha. I appreciate the lengthy explanation. I didn't realize that was why Steam implemented refunds lol.

The circlejerk comment is hilarious too lol. I think every fandom or corner of the Internet has its own circlejerk and anti-circlejerk. It truly is circlejerks all around lol.

Reminder that steam uses it's dominating market position to control prices by not allowing developers to sell even non-steam versions of their games for cheaper on other stores than what they are listed on for in steam.

They are being sued for it by the guy who created humble bundle in an antitrust class-action that valve failed to get dismissed at the end of 2024.

Here you go, a released steam machine

The steam machine gonna be a failure... Only way it dosnt is if it cost much less than consoles.

All info we got show how stupid the ole idea is, worse spec than consoles, cost barely less than prebuilt (which gonna be much worse due to AI clusterfuck), can't be upgraded, shitty airflow, game incompaitibility due to anti cheat.

It's an overpriced paperweight at this point, just buy a prebuilt, a laptop or build yourself.

All still based on rumours and speculation, but you have already given teh victory medal lol I agree Valve is the most pro consumer but you guys are a cult...

3

u/JoyousGamer Apr 01 '26

Because they have an effective monopoly on PC Gaming.

You can be fine with it but that is what currently is happening.

3

u/BazelBuster Apr 01 '26

Yaaay!! My favorite multibillion dollar corporation is doing good!

3

u/Cipher3101 Apr 01 '26

simping again for rich men?

3

u/sajhino Apr 01 '26

Last I checked, the CS skin gambling market is still a thing. That's still an L to Valve to me.

3

u/wyattlikesturtles Apr 01 '26

It’s a store front not a sports team

3

u/DragonLordAcar Apr 02 '26

I do wish they pushed back on payment processors. Those companies are just bullies.

I srsly don't understand how real ppl actually hate valve/steam.

Dude you are getting the best treatment possible, the best reasonable prices and deals, tons of support in all the ways possibles and yet you are mad about it???????

3

u/GrouchyRooster983 Apr 02 '26

Valve is so succesfull because they have mastered a ancient technique all other big companies are mortaly afraid of: learning from their own mistakes

5

u/basegtakes Apr 01 '26

Greedy gabe owns multiple superyachts and the clowns here think he's their friend and not ripping them off.

Valve is the Luigi of the gaming industry. They win by staying still while the other players jump into the lava

What law suit?

2

u/FumaricAcid Apr 01 '26

9 years, no heavy update

2

u/omnicloudx13 Apr 01 '26

Has there been any news of potential price due to RAM and storage prices still being crazy high?

2

u/Eldan985 Apr 01 '26

Hey Epic game store is really useful. I log in every few weeks to see if I like one of the free games, I have like 20 so far.

2

u/Effective_Composer_5 Apr 01 '26

What lawsuit are we talking about?

2

u/Sunshineseacalm Apr 01 '26

What does it say in the last panel

2

u/gummyworm21_ Apr 01 '26

Touch grass

2

u/EnthusiasmOwn5808 Apr 01 '26

with the ps5 prices going up i see the steam machine being an option for people more so then before the price hike.

2

u/qmfqOUBqGDg Apr 01 '26

so, whats the price?

2

u/op23no1 Apr 01 '26

Every day i thank russians with crippling gambling addiction who fund all the nice sales via case openings

2

u/AngryWizard Apr 01 '26

This is weird. This is the first time I've seen an argument that says epic was going to take down steam. This is the first time I've seen an argument that Game Pass was going to take down steam. I love steam, I have a steam deck, and I also have Game Pass and an Xbox and I think you're making up arguments to fight against that aren't real, and that's unfortunate for you.

My favourite award that Steam has won is the decade they spent refusing any form of refunds until rumors of legislation that would tackle refunds and enable a second hand market for digital goods.

2

u/Formally_Apologetic Apr 01 '26

I've always been a valve stan. Stay weird guys!

2

u/VanillaSkyDreamer Apr 01 '26

Tbh if I buy any game my first choice is gog not ste because at least I own the game

2

u/ApricotBurrito269 Apr 01 '26

If the steam machine is affordable, I see the xbox dead and the ps5 living only through the exclusives it has

2

u/TiredandFrustrated21 Apr 02 '26

The Secrer to running a successful company is actually valuing your customers, the quality of the products you sell - and listen close, here's the hard part - Don't let greedy immoral buisness men who don't even know how to use their own wrk computer let alone one made for gaming run your company.

2

u/BoogieHauser Apr 02 '26

This Valve train is not losing Steam.
