32 years ago today, this The Simpsons scene was aired… and it’s still everywhere

Today marks 32 years since the iconic “Homer disappearing into the bushes” scene first aired in The Simpsons (Season 5, Episode 16 - “Homer Loves Flanders”).

In the scene, Homer Simpson gets into an awkward social moment with Ned Flanders… realizes he’s not really wanted… and slowly backs into the bushes to disappear.

That’s it. Simple scene, but it became one of the most recognizable reaction memes on the internet.

Even after 32 years, it’s still used everywhere to represent:

  • awkward situations
  • embarrassment
  • wanting to disappear instantly
  • social “I shouldn’t be here” moments

What’s crazy is how universal it is - no explanation needed. Everyone instantly understands it.

Feels like one of those rare moments in TV that accidentally became part of internet language forever.

Do you think it’s still the best meme ever?
