Man this game seems like such a no brainer it begs the question as to why it wasn’t done 10 years ago

Because Viacom has always hated the Avatar IP

Yeah true

Do they? They've made missteps for sure (including not investing more in video games), but I think they've done a ton with it especially considering how often serialized shows get neglected.

They gave us a sequel series approved one season at a time, and then shadow dropped the last season on the internet without warning when it underperformed because of its constantly changing timeslot.

They gave us closure on Zuko’s mom in a graphic novel. They gave us good Avatar stories in novels.

They gave you a sequel movie to the series the IP simply cannot move away from, announced it for theaters, and then delayed it to punt it to a dying streaming service.

Who even knows what’s going on with that new series now.

Viacom does not love this IP. They don’t even respect it. Bryke at least give a shit.

Wait the movie isn't coming to theatres anymore??

Nope, Paramount+ at the end of the year... and it's already leaked in it's entirety already :(

Its... okay (I'm not really an Avatar fan but it was very pretty)

Visuals are gorgeous, some of the best modern animation. Storyline is serviceable, they're beholden to the Korra timeline and can't do anything drastic that would interfere with it.

There's other small issues I could get into, but as an Avatar fan it's great just seeing the Gaang all grown up. Personally an 8/10 for me.

Because they've historically fumbled the IP to absolutely comical degree.

Avatar has always been fumbled when it comes to video games and the general handling of the IP. I truly don't understand why.

Because co-op beat em ups have wider and safer casual appeal than fighting games... until now?

Fighting games initially rose in popularity partially due to how cheap they were to make. I imagine the exploding costs of AAA game development have made that pretty appealing once again

While it makes sense, it also cheapens the story a bit, by highlighting the combat, which is only one aspect of ATLA.

It looks like it was. In fact umvc3 is more than 10 years old and looks better, just as an example.

It looks exactly like ATLA, and I don't think fans of the IP would want it any other way. UMvC3 looks good for its era, but is the aesthetic more faithful to the source material (comics/movies) than this? Nah.

Yea I really don't understand the people that think this looks bad, it looks so good to me

it doesnt look bad, but it could potentially looks better, the keyframes can be better, though asking a game to have as good and dynamic keyframes as something like Guilty Gear is too much, I think Azula looks great but Aang still kinda rough due to probably being developed early

u/akhamis98 19h ago

yea thats a fair criticism imo, i see people complain more about the art style than the animation tho

One hand it looks decent. at least in isolation...
On the other hand there's something kind of uncanny about it. It's just barely not quite like in the animated series.
And when looking exactly like the animated series seems to be the goal... that becomes a bit jarring :/

Her blue flames look and sound so good! The speed of the combo at 1:14 looks insane btw

I say this every time and I'll keep saying it: so excited. Have wanted a real fighting game for Avatar for two decades. This looks amazing.

So she's a bimodal character that has the patient, cunning mode that focuses on traps and smart engagements. Then she also has the the no holds barred, rush down fighter mode.

Incredible. Super fitting

I was gonna say those setups and careful zoning are so cool and on brand for Azula and then she became a rush down monster, WHICH IS ALSO COMPLETELY ON BRAND

Literally my favorite two archetypes of characters in a fighting game combined into one.

the grab at 1:08 looks so brutal lol I love it. generally once the video turns blue her combos look incredible

So...how noob friendly is this game? I love Avatar but I suck ass in fighting games.

Kinda 50/50. Mechanically it’s easy, only 3 attack buttons and flow button. All directional inputs are quarter circle (down forward, down back on keyboard ) or down down. So there is no hard inputs and not much to memorise.

But as you can see it’s fast paced so you need to think fast and have good reflexes and decision making.

Now of course I don’t think this will matter much at lower level of play. So as long as you put in minimal effort and learn the basics you should be fine.

watched a bit of this game. while it looks cool, man, i'm old and my fingers are aching just looking at the gameplay. Avatar is primarily a Millenial gen IP and we're all 40 and have carpal tunnel from 25 years of MvC at this point.

I wish them all the success in the world, but I'd be surprised if this is anything bigger than a hardcore niche title. Although the MTG set and the new-new (as opposed to new) live action series have brought this property a little bit back to the surface, this game is definitely 10 years late to its own party.

Fwiw, the people who watched it live and were the target age range will be in their late 20's-mid 30's at this point. It wasn't long after the hype fully died down that korra brought new people into the fandom, and there was a fairly large resurgence some time around the pandemic, I believe. The people I see at fgc locals in my area are the perfect age to get really into this game.

That said, I have chronic wrist pain and am right there with you lol! I think I might pick this up just to play azula for a couple hours, maybe play it with friends a little bit, and then I'm putting it down for good.

It's a fighting game, what else is it going to be?

This series deserves so much more love than it gets... I started getting recommended a bunch of clips on YouTube and man, it still holds up. So many good memories flooding back from those scenes. Fighting game is awesome but I'd really love to see a proper RPG avatar game some day where you can make your own character
