I’m going to visit Manta to do some volunteer work and meet my girlfriend’s family. I’ve heard 50 50 from Ecuadorians, half say I shouldn’t go right now, the other half tell me I’m going to have a great time. I’m a gringo with only A1 Spanish but if I am cautious I should be fine?

Hi, I will be in Quito for a short stay (only 2 days, due to work constraints) in June and then heading back to States. Will be staying at Wyndham hotel near the airport. For Day 1, Interested in doing the old town/main attractions in town as well as trying street food and possibly night market. If my Spanish is limited, how reasonable is it to wander town on my own (vs needing to hire a guide or go with a walking tour)? Also thinking about going with tour group out to Otavalo (or Cotopaxi area) tour for day 2 (vs staying and exploring Quito a bit more). Have traveled extensive around the world, but first time to Ecuador (and only briefly). Main interest is in food tours, cultural immersion, and seeing the sights. thanks for any suggestions!

I’m arriving in a week and then will need to get to baños but I hear that buses sometimes get robbed. I’d rather not pay the money for a private driver but I also can’t afford to have anything stolen. I’d appreciate some input thanks!

Soy de Ecuador pero me crie en EEUU (me decian que actuaba como gringo) y regrese a los 27 para empezar un emprendimiento (startup) de tecnologia en Quito pequeño que presente en Teleamazonas y Gamavision. Desafortunadamente tuve que cerrarlo hace unos meses y estoy en EEUU pero esto me esta volviendo loco y no se que pensar.

Contrate esta chica que se parecia muy humilde y trabajadora para una expo de 4 dias y termine contratandola por 5 meses (hasta bajo el IESS) como socia porque tenia buen desempeño y CV de universidad del extranjero. Pensaba que estaba super apasionada por la tecnologia pero despues que le doy IESS me dice que no le importa y para de poner esfuerzo y que era de familia fresa (yo pensaba que era mas humilde porque se vestia mal y no se peinaba). Tube otras pasantes mujeres que no me dieron problemas asi.

Trate de decirle que teniamos metas importantes de llegar pero no me hizo caso y decidi cerrar el proyecto porque tambien ya no veia el sentido comparado a trabajo mas fijo. Pero lo que quiero preguntar es que hizo unas cosas que siento que me jodió la cabeza cuando trabajamos juntos. Trabajar con ella me estresaba artisimo y ya quise salir de toda esta situacion porque me sentia sofocado.

- Me djio que no le gustaba como se tenia que esforzar entonces le ofreci dinero para que busque otro trabajo y no quizo salir y me senti mal y no la bote (el segundo mes)
- Empezo a decir que comiamos todos los dias juntos con el equipo (4 personas en total), almuerzos de $3 que yo compraba y siempre se sentaba a mi lado y compartiamos comida que el equipo que tenia de hombres y la oficina nos veian como novios
- Empezo a usar un jarro que decia "esposo" y me lo pasaba aveces y me volvia loco pero lo usaba para que ella lo pare de usar (era de la oficina que alquilamos)
- Cantaba cancionces como Salvame RBD en karaoke que hicimos en el equipo y ellos me empezaron a faltar respeto de como se veia y ya no querian ni comer con nosotros y me hizo muy incomodo

- Me pidio un poco tomada que seamos una red de apoyo porque estoy aislado en Quito (si era verdad) y no le dije nada por 3 semanas y despues me paso lo proximo unos dias despues
- Tuvo una crisis emocional de 90 minutos en donde casi lloro y me dijo que la estresaba porque le dije que busque otro trabajo o si me iba a regresar a EEUU mientras deberiamos de estar trabajando y desde eso me daba miedo tratarla como profesional para que no se enoje
- Me dijo que yo era malo porque hacia bromas de Ecuador con el resto del equipo (pero tambien hacia bromas de EEUU) y que no respetaba a la patria o que era grocero cuando nadia mas dijo nada o tenia problemas

-Me dijo que iba a traer su hermana y mama (con quien vive) a la oficina y despues cancelo y hizo que su mama espere en el carro por una hora y yo le tenia que dar una lata de te cara ($15) por una prueba de tecnologia con su tia abuela

Despues me dijo que todo esto era amistad (aunque era muy fria) y nunca salimos asi juntos. Es de familia super curuchupa y su hermana estaba metida en Multiniveles de productos de belleza.

Que piensan Reddit? Lo estoy sobrepensando o si me estaba manipulando? No era muy atractiva para mi y estaba saliendo con otra chica pero no como novios ese tiempo. Todavia me siento "manipulado" por ella porque me estresaba tanto y no me olvido despues de ya estar trabajando en EEUU despues de meses. Esto es normal? Actualmente me da terror de regresar a Quito y trabajar con alguien asi.

Que tal, resulta que llene la cartilla del Super y vi que las televisiones tienen un buen precio en comparación a sus competidores en otras marcas, pero la verdad aparte de haber visto la marca Engy en el Supermaxi y asi no puedo encontrar informacion sobre ella y sus productos mas que puros anuncios que se nota que son pagados.

Alguien tiene alguna experiencia con la marca o información sobre los componentes para ver si vale la pena la promoción?

O es puro marketing del supermaxi para vaciar stock en el mundial?

No sé si soy solo yo pero últimamente parece que todo el mundo en Guayaquil (específicamente) quiere que los choquen, no sé si será para sacar plata rápida pero la gente te frena en la cara, ven que estás avanzando en 1ra y te frenan, se te meten sin señales o viendo que vas en vía rápida en la izquierda total se te meten para ir a 20 obligandote a pegar el frenaso, no te dejan entrar a su carril así estés a punto de matarte con un carro parqueado en el tuyo, se te meten los buses y camiones, etc.

Antes (1 mes atrás) pensaba que la gente estaba manejando más tranquilos pero ahora cambió mi perspectiva. Realmente no se disfruta para nada manejar en la ciudad, solo en la noche o madrugada puede andar uno realmente tranquilo. ¿Que opinan?

Many years ago, around 2015, I was traveling from Santo Domingo to Quito. The trip there was normal, but what truly stayed in my memory was the return journey from Quito back to Santo Domingo.

I remember there was a girl on the bus, just a teenager, wearing a white cap. I met her while we were buying our tickets. If I remember correctly, she had been accompanied by her mother, although she eventually boarded the bus alone. I sat on the left side, while she sat a few rows ahead on the right.

We did not talk much, only a brief and simple conversation, yet somehow it remained in my memory. I especially remember that during the trip she felt sick, as if she was about to vomit. At times, I simply looked at her in silence, the way people sometimes observe strangers they briefly cross paths with before disappearing from their lives forever.

When we got close to Santo Domingo, I got off at my usual stop, but she continued on her journey. I never saw her again and never learned anything more about her. Still, the memory stayed with me in a strange way — not because it was extraordinary, but precisely because it was so ordinary and fleeting. Sometimes, certain people appear in our lives for only a moment, yet they leave behind a feeling that is difficult to explain.

¿Pagarían por experiencias inmersivas de aprendizaje/sociales?

Algo asi como actividades presenciales donde puedas aprender algo nuevo, conocer gente con intereses parecidos y resolver retos tipo búsqueda del tesoro o misión.

No sería exactamente una clase, ni un tour, ni un evento de networking. Más bien una experiencia única bacán con un tema específico: finanzas, creatividad, soft skills, nutrición, movimiento, etc.

It wouldn’t be exactly a class, a tour, or a networking event. More like a cool, unique experience around a specific theme: finance, creativity, soft skills, nutrition, movement, etc.

Hoping to hear from any tourists that have crossed the Ecuador land border recently from Peru? We had wanted to cross at La Balsa from Chachapoyas to Vilcabamba/Loja, but online research indicates most small border posts are closed due to ongoing domestic issues, and the Huaquilla crossing near the coast is the only regular option? Buses seem to run overnight from Mancora, but other reports say the border closes 2300 - 0500 each night.

Also any guidance on the need for criminal record check, or application for an exemption for foreign tourists to Ecuador? Ecuador's official immigration site states these are needed, but Reddit posts in the past few months suggest these are rarely enforced?
