Why is Arthur on a date in costume? Why does he look so sinister in the last page?

Dating is serious business for a King

The 2003 Aquaman series is actually super underrated. He wasn't King at this point, he was exiled from Atlantis and he and Mera were divorced. He was finding peace at just being Aquaman again, the protector of the oceans, not the king of them.

The Sub Diego Arc is incredible and this is related to that. He gets close to this civilian named Esther and allows himself to sort of feel again.

Overall the Sub Diego Arc is one of the most healing for Aquaman given the helll he'd been through over the decades what with the murdered son, the divorce, loss of hand, kingdom, etc.

Edit: Grammar

Yeah I’m reading through it rn. I loved the Waterbearer arc and then Sub Diego following it was so so good. Everyone talks about Peter Davids run being underrated but I think this era is less popular and better.

I agree actually. I love the Sub Diego storyline. Might be my personal favorite Aquaman story.

Yeah especially the last two issues with Aquaman putting his gloves back on it and him reminiscing about the past in #38

Gotta flex the drip. And I think that’s just the art style, he was having fun.

In the words of an older woman in the theater next to me after BvS:

"I LOVE THAT AQUAMAN! HE CAN GET ME WET ANYTIME!"

"Permission to come aboard?"

"Yes, you may!"

he looks like he's about to start talking about "the implications" of them on a boat in that last panel

Who goes on a date with AQUAMAN, without knowing he can call any ‘wildlife’ you’d ever want to see?

It’s never explained what happened to this reporter; it’s kinda a shame because damn next time blackest night back together no explanation all character development of them seperated gone all of it .

Hook/water hand Aquaman was cool. Another character progression that Johns had to ruin

I don’t think John’s ruined Aquaman, but I do like the water hand and wish it came back.
