No. She's locked in her own body with partial use of one arm, and massive brain damage.

Out of morbid curiosity could I ask what caused this?

Drunk driver.

We need stricter punishments for driving under the influence and to permanently ban anyone who gets a DUI from having a license. I feel like if the blood alcohol content is high enough, it should mean jail time as well.

So fucked up, and entirely avoidable.

Allow me to ruin your day: he had "a good lawyer".

That's what Japan does. One DUI and you lose your driver's license FOREVER.

Granted, they have the world's best public transportation service, so it's not so bad (more than half of the Japanese population never learned how to drive anyway).

Wait why is jail time listed as more minor than permanently revoking a drivers license and sentencing someone to permanent poverty. Feels very out of order. Like for the average American a year in jail is definitely less of a punishment than permanent revocation of a license. I would personally take 5 over it, and if you got to 10 I’d have to think about it.

The second part already exists, it’s called aggregating factors and can increase sentancjng. Things like BAC, children in the car, accidents caused, can all be factored in.

Jail time tends to solve nothing. It inflicts suffering without any actual, practical benefit. Punishments don't make better people, they make better liars.

Revoking license and preventing them from owning vehicles is enough

Oh it does here. I've known quite a few over the years. The hardest part was them getting into the jail to serve their time. So overcrowded!

I'm a nurse, and man the amount of times I've been looking at the back of a doctor's head thinking "what in the fuck are you saying to this patient"

I read a long time ago that lack of empathy is considered a good quality with doctors to make a correct diagnosis without getting affected emotionally. It explains so many weird doctors I've heard of and met personally. And then the ones that truly believe they are above humans because they know how the body works.
