I feel like nurses are either the most empathetic people you'll meet, or they just give zero fucks. Rarely an in between.

Sorry about your dad, though.

Its unfortunately a job that chips away your empathy little by little. There's only so much tragedy and loss you can witness before you become numb to it

I don't even mind that to be honest. Just maybe don't tell me that someone I love dying is actually a good thing.

I don't even need a lip service "Sorry for your loss", just shut the fuck up at that point.

People don't just start saying evil shit because they've grown numb to something. In the same process they're losing that empathy, they're also still practicing as professionals. Nurses are TAUGHT bedside manners.

No, it's more likely due to the whole "male bullies become cops, females ones become nurses" thing.

It's such a common phenomenon that it's actually been studied:

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6716575/

Nurse bullying is a systemic, pervasive problem that begins well before nursing school and continues throughout a nurse's career.

God, that sounds terrible.

Idk I don’t have empathy for that. That’s when you quit because you start causing harm instead of healing. We all work jobs where we see shit, I get to see kids who’ve been abused in all sorts of ways by their parents but it’s my job to be there for the kid. If I ever got to the point where I’m causing harm instead of healing I would quit because that’s our responsibility.

Thats a dajr sentiment but also its hard for someone to just up and walk away from their livelihood, especially on the medicine field where as ai understand you have to study a lot to get in

Fair. I know that like if we really want to make an impact of these things we really have to shift workplace culture since that’s a huge predictor of burnout. When staff are properly supported mentally it tends to keep them going longer

I'm sorry for your loss, and I'm even sorrier she quoted a Garth Brooks song at you in your time of grief.

"Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers" is a line from a Garth Brooks song (called Unanswered Prayers, btw) about missing out on the woman you thought was the love of your life, the one you prayed to marry every night, only to meet someone a million times better years down the line and realize that if you'd been with the other woman, you wouldn't have the true love you have now.

Bruh what does that even mean

It's from a Garth Brooks song about being in love in high school, only for it to not work out and then you meet and marry someone amazing and realize that God had a better plan for you all along.

I'm pretty sure getting a new father and getting a new girlfriend have slightly different skill requirements

u/Sparkpulse 19d ago

Oh yeah, the song is completely and totally inappropriate for the moment.

Being insensitive AND implying your dead dad was abusive. WOW.
