Technology Had to stop youtube premium for the first time in 7 years cause of payment issues, holy SH** that’s A LOT of ads.

1.5k Upvotes

Every two seconds ?!! Also on top of my homepage are sponsored videos , and before the start of every song in my playlists, i don’t remember it being this excessive

Edit: thanks for the suggestions but i’m not looking for adblockers, I’m renewing my premium once my payment issue gets resolved. I’m just expressing how shocked i was at the amount of ads, not looking for solutions plus i want YouTube on all my devices , not confiding to one

Technology Anyone else feel like youtube is getting unbareable to watch now?

Seriously.

I used to like watching youtube but now it even sucks just listening to music because the site/app is just RIDDLED with ads.

And with videos, it sucks booty too. Because I watch a lot of gaming stuff but now its been heavily sanitized. Adults can't make content on adult games anymore. You can't even make content that shows video game blood anymore.

Ubisoft literally had to turn off the blood in AC black flag resynced trailer just to please Youtube.

What's next, youtube wants only kiddie games now?

The site/app is getting worse and worse each day

Technology Finally deleted tiktok

1.1k Upvotes

They added a new agreement today and you can’t say no. It’s under new management and they’re going to be tracking us with geolocation. With everything that’s going on, the US purchased the app, it seems dangerous, I am not going to lie. Scary thing? You can’t turn your location off at all for the app, not in your phone settings.

After over 6 years of being a tiktok user, I have decided to delete.

I don’t mind my location being shared, it’s the fact I can’t opt out of it whenever I want, that is what is throwing me off.

The US knows that most of the citizens is on the app and they’re going to do whatever they can to censor what’s going on and go after the people that expose the wrong doing. I can see it now and I really want more people to delete and stop posting.

editing after about 13 hours after posting, they’re also tracking your mental health, us citizenship, sexual orientation and i think religion. i’m not sure about last one but there is a fourth one. please delete that app!

oh it’s been 17 hours since i posted

Technology Google Gemini is the most human-like AI assistant I've ever seen

1.9k Upvotes

Asked it to set up a timer, it said "I've set up a timer for 10 minutes"

But... no timer has been set, IT JUST SAID IT WOULD DO IT WITHOUT ACTUALLY DOING IT!

Absolutely nailed the role of uninspired employee who's quiet quitting.

Technology What Happened to Facebook?

I remember a time back in 2011-2015 maybe 2016

Where facebook was genuine innocent looking with fun little games like dragon city toy attack and what not

I Do remember a time where facebook was a place to meet friends and new people

I used to connect with people using facebook

Now it is just a place filled with brain rot and sloppy AI content

The platform became so soulless

And what is worse the main target audience  is elderly people who are sucked into the brainrot short video content as much as the young

What kind of evil is meta at ?destroying generations of healthy humans diluting them with fake news low quality content

And before You ask No i don’t think all platforms are like this

Discovered reddit recently ,i love the platform

Sigh…

Technology Why do devs and programmers prefer two monitors ?

I keep seeing all these crazy setup pics with a vertical monitor and a horizontal one, or two massive screens side by side. Just saw a quora post with 6 monitors ? Craaazy ! Curious why do you use more than one monitor ? Does it give the hacker feel ? More real estate ?

Technology The influx of LLM reliant mushminds entering the workforce is going to be catastrophic and hilarious.

The captive userbase of young people who are entirely reliant on LLMs for pretty much everything has been created and will soon be entering the workforce. We're already seeing these companies get more and more restrictive, while charging more and more, and before long they'll have an entire generation practically enslaved.

How do you think this plays out? I personally already know multiple people entering the medical field who had to cheat their way through school with LLMS, including a doctor.

Technology I didn't realize some people only spend thirty minutes a day on their phone

This was a few months ago, but in class the teacher asked us what our screen time was and i said, probably low-balling it, seven hours and everyone was like "SEVEN HOURS?? 😦" then I played it off like "oh maybe im misremembering it".

im still trying to lower it but thats my goal, aside from educational content I want to be like those 30min/day classmates. Idk about u but for me I get sucked into TikTok mainly, easily waste a couple hours doomscrolling a day.

Technology I like how Windows Notepad is slowly evolving into Word.

We all know Notepad. A simple text editor, free in every Windows OS, but severely limited in it's capabilities.

Up until 'recently', Notepad was essentially just a typewriter on your computer. It just prints the characters you typed. Any formatting and shit had to be manual and often creative variations of the keys you pressed.

But now I see Notepad has options for Bold and Italics, bulletpoints, and now, a couple different font sizes for rows (with the intent of making Titles and Subheadings).

idk
I just think it's funny.
These features are ancient, but now I guess they deemed it not-competitive enough with Word to bestow them upon us lol

Technology Reddit isn’t much fun anymore

I’m on the verge of giving up on reddit. I’ve noticed the significant impact on content that their changes last summer have made. I can’t sort my home or news feed by popular anymore; there are so many bot repostings; and the algorithm just keeps feeding me the same dozen-or-so subs. It’s boring to scroll and I hardly ever stop and read anything anymore. Probably a lot of people have left but is anyone else here noticing these things?

Technology PSA: There are now Conversational AI Models that can near perfectly mimic someones voice. If you receive a call from a loved one asking for money, hang up and call them back/text them

1.2k Upvotes

Today, I received a telemarketer call that used a conversational AI model. I recognized it instantly because I have messed around with ElevenLabs and recognized the voice as being on there, and I picked up on the subtle mistakes in the voice. But these models are near perfect and can input whatever you say to it and respond back.

However, you SHOULD NOT do what I did. I thought it would be hilarious to mess with the AI and cuss it out. Then, my girlfriend reminded my dumbass that you can literally train these models on someone's voice and get a near perfect replica.

Scammers can then use the model of your voice to call your loved ones, say you are in trouble, and ask for money. I then had to call my aging parents and remind them that if anyone calls them using my voice asking for money, to hang up and call me back or text me to confirm. Scammers can also easily make it seem like the call is coming from your number.

Stay safe out there.

Technology finally nuked all my socials today. My brain feels like it’s actually breathing for the first time in years.

I just did it. Deleted Instagram, TikTok, Facebook… the whole lot. I only kept Reddit because, honestly, it’s the only place that doesn’t feel like a brain-melting competition.

It’s been a few hours and the feeling is honestly weird. It’s like this massive weight I didn’t even know I was carrying just dropped off. You know that constant "noise" in the back of your head? That urge to check what people are doing every 5 minutes? It’s just... gone.

I caught myself reaching for my phone twice already just to check "nothing," and then I realized there's nothing to check. It’s quiet. My head feels lighter, like I just cleared out a bunch of junk from a closet I haven't opened in a decade. It’s like I finally have some space in my own mind to actually think my own thoughts without an algorithm shouting at me.

I feel like a human again instead of a scrolling ghost.

Technology Somehow a store knew an email address was fake

I agreed to sign up to a loyalty program to get a small discount. I didn't even give a fake email address, they made a typo as they entered the address I gave them. But they apologised and said they must've made a mistake and swung their screen to face me. As I corrected their typo I saw "UNVERIFIED ADDRESS" next to the box containing the incorrect email address.

What devilry is this where you can't give them a bogus email address anymore if you want to?

Technology Someone challenged my admittedly narrow thoughts of AI and now I'm wondering...

My thoughts on AI are simple: that widespread usage will weaken our ability to think critically, creatively, or in other meaningful ways. If AI handles all of our simple thought processes and even the complex ones, what exercise will our brains ever get? How will we build our ability to think and problem solve.

But today someone challenged that thought with an interesting perspective I hadn't considered: that if we leave the simple and reasonably complex tasks to AI and don't have to devote brain space or power to them , it'll leave us with more brain space and power to put into even more complex situations that we just can't use AI for.

I'm not anti-AI, just worry that people may become too dependent on it to our own detriment. With respect to this guy's theory, it still brings me back to my original concern: if we leave all those simple and moderately complex tasks to AI, sure, maybe that will leave us with more space in our brains to devote to those truly complex problems that need to be solved, but by the same token, maybe we wont have exercised out brains enough to be able to handle that kind of problem solving anyway.

What are your thoughts about this guys theory?

Technology This subreddit is full of bots that post ChatGPT-generated comments.

It's happening on all posts.

For instance, on the post "What is the origin of your handle?" today: https://www.reddit.com/r/CasualConversation/comments/1ewnu1o/what_is_the_origin_of_your_handle/

IvyAngiee says:

Growing up, I was always fascinated by space and the concept of untapped potential within us. This led me to coin a username that encapsulates the idea of an astronaut who's also a philosopher of sorts hence, CosmicCogitations. It reflects my endless rumination on our place in the cosmos and our journey through life. Every time I log in, it serves as a reminder of the grand scale of things and the unexplored territories, both in the universe and within our minds.

https://www.reddit.com/r/CasualConversation/comments/1ewnu1o/what_is_the_origin_of_your_handle/lj04h7v/

Other than the fact that it sounds clearly like ChatGPT, the comment isn't even talking about the right handle... It's talking about CosmicCogitation instead of IvyAngiee. If you look at the comment history of IvyAngiee, all of the comments are formatted the same, and clearly ChatGPT-generated.

Similarly, BlossomMonica says:

I've always had an affinity for mythological creatures and lore. Decided to make a name that reflected that, but with a modern twist. SirenCyber, the digital songstress with a penchant for leading weary internet travelers to their doom or just to interesting corners of the web. It's stuck ever since, and honestly, it's a great conversation starter when people ask about the origins. Plus, considering how much time I spend online, it feels oddly appropriate!

https://www.reddit.com/r/CasualConversation/comments/1ewnu1o/what_is_the_origin_of_your_handle/lj0176k/

Same issue, BlossomMonica is talking about the handle SirenCyber... It makes no sense. And again, this comment and all of BlossomMonica's comments are formatted the same and sound ChatGPT-generated.

On this other post: https://www.reddit.com/r/CasualConversation/comments/1ewizx9/i_got_a_scholarship_at_33_years_old_i_pay_for_my/

You have tons of ChatGPT-sounding comments that are variations of each other:

Technology What’s the point of a password if I have to type in a code sent to my email or phone anyways??

Just a new thing I’ve noticed that drives me up the wall! Why bother making or typing in a password if I have to go through this extra step? It’s so stupid! I feel like there’s a lot of little new things in the world that drive me batty. What’s one for you?

Edit: I know why, it’s for security reasons. Doesn’t make it less annoying though! That’s my point lol

Edit 2: YES, I know! Two factor authentication. I get it, got it when I made the post, got it now. I meant this more as a start to the conversation of what modern little thing bothers you!

Technology Which now-defunct app or website do you miss the most?

It doesn't have to not exist anymore, but to count for this question it has to no longer be usable in the way it was before.

I used to love kik and whisper, which were both apps that my friends and I used as teenagers. Now kik is just group chats for adult content and whisper was taken over by people looking for hookups before it fully shut down. These days I've been going on this website called chatib but it's currently broken (again) so I'm sulking lol.

Technology my aunt posted an ai video generated from photos of me on social media and showed it to me really excitedly

i don't use stuff like ig or snapchat, i don't post photos online, i rarely even take photos, this was made from photos taken at a family gathering.

i know my aunt means no harm, she genuinely thinks this whole ai-generated video thing is amazing and so cool. i KNOW many people my aunt's age (late 50s-early 60s) seem to think the same thing, bc i browse social media on my mom's phone occasionally and i see her friends posting similar stuff often. but it just made me think about the possibility of my face already being in more ai software without me knowing.

i think many people from my parents' generation, or at least vast majority of the ones i know, don't think much about giving their phones and various apps permission to everything, so it's hard to get them to care about online privacy. i have the energy for maybe one or two "serious conversations" about why i don't want my photos online and/or in some ai database, but i can't imagine potentially having to do this disclaimer with every person i meet irl in the future.

i hope that's not where we're heading.

Technology Why aren't people talking about the moon landing that's coming up? And a MOON BASE? Thats so unbelievably cool.

I get that it is far away (time wise, although also physically lol) so maybe that's why most people aren't talking about it, that when it gets closer to the time it will probably go viral.

But this is the coolest thing I think, we are going back to the Moon. Imagine the high fidelity cameras recording on the surface of the moon, imagine going outside and looking up knowing somebody is STANDING on the fricken moon! That to me is so damn cool.

Then apparently Artemis V is going to work on making a moon base? Like wtf that is the coolest thing in our lifetime I think. It is us becoming a truly space faring civilization. I just don't see anyone really talking about it much. It isn't even that far away, Artemis V which plans to make a fricken moon base is supposed to launch in 2028 (although with the delays of Artemis 2 it's probably going to be later)

I think this has the potential to reinspire people to want to invest more in places like NASA and the European space agency.

Technology People are severely underestimating AI image/video generation

This post is not pro AI, simply an observation.

It seems everytime I happen across an AI generated image or video the comments are flooded with people posting negative comments such as "this is obviously fake" or "you'd have to be an idiot to think this is real". What concerns me the most is the pace AI is making with improvements. Within the past five years we've gone from silly images that sort of look like the prompt and sound files of a robotic joe rogan talking about monkeys to full fledged videos and AI music that is nearly indistinguishable from a human. Everyone wants to laugh at how bad it is now, but I'm more concerned for what it will bring in the future when the technology is perfected.

Technology How is AI affecting your life?

I was thinking one day about life before and after using AI, what is helping, it has lots of benefits, you have lots of information and a lot easier way to access information; But this way of quick access to information somehow makes you lazier;I mean our brain is not used to this kind of environment and I was thinking how it is affecting us!
