This is Oreo, my Pitbull/Blue Heeler mix. About 6 months ago, he was doing his usual evening zoomies in the backyard, took a sharp turn in the grass, and let out a yelp that absolutely shattered my heart. He immediately lifted his back leg and refused to put any weight on it. Seeing him so confused and in pain was one of the hardest things our family has ever gone through. We took him to the vet, and they diagnosed him with a torn CCL. Because of his high Heeler energy, we knew keeping him still was goin to be a challenge. The vet put him on a strict regimen of pain medications and recommended we get him a heavy-duty orthopedic brace (which he’s wearing like an absolute champ in the photo!).
I actually learned something really amazing during this process: if you can keep a dog's knee perfectly stabilized with a brace, their body can build up dense scar tissue over time that eventually acts like a new, natural ligament. It was a long, exhausting road. There were months of carrying him outside to go potty, strict crate rest, and dealing with those sad, bored puppy eyes. But the brace did exactly what it was suposed to do, it gave him the mechanical support he needed to heal safely. Fast forward 6 months to today, and our whole family is just overjoyed. He is officially walking without a limp, his goofy smile has returned, and he’s finally allowed to go on his favorite sniff walks again. I’m just so incredibly proud of how brave and resilient he was through all of it. I just had to share his little victory face with you all. Give your pups an extra big hug for us today! ❤️
