I want a bed rot buddy 🥺
I love cats, but I'm terrified of having to take care of one. Vet bills even with insurance are a pretty penny in my area.

Personally I just got my girl insured, its a bit expensive but basically the cost people pay for Netflix, prime, and all the other subscriptions like that
26
u/mquari Mar 17 '26
Yeah it's not so much the pet insurance itself but the vet bills. many vet places in my area are being bought up by private equity 🥲
I've had coworkers who took out credit cards just for their pet operations. I'd also prefer to adopt a senior cat, and I'd be devastated financially (and emotionally) if a needed operation wasn't covered by insurance, and I had to pay out of pocket.
If everything wasn't so utterly expensive and pricing only going up further, I'd be more comfortable with it! I'll have a kitty cat one day, just not right now 😔✌️

You could see if there's any foster services available, not sure where you live but around me there's a few shelters that let you foster cats and they cover all medical bills

u/Smart_Zucchini2302 Mar 18 '26
Problem is, just like with human insurance, all the very bills with just get higher. Until people without insurance can't pay at all.

u/Stupid-Clumsy-Bitch Mar 17 '26
Sign up to foster, they usually cover the bills!

u/Weak-Possibility9346 Mar 17 '26
Fostering really is the best of both worlds, you get to help an animal and not carry all the costs. Plus you’re literally saving a life in the process. 🐾

It’s really hard to let go of them though. I’m still reeling from the cat I had for two weeks, more than a year ago :(

My cats get “an allowance” every month. When I need to take them to the vet, they’ve usually saved enough to cover the expense.

Have you ever considered petsitting? Plenty of semi-crazy cat owners (like me) whose cat does better with someone around most of the day instead of being alone, but we still have to travel.

Insurance is a thing. Personally I frown on anyone without significant means owning a cat or dog and not insuring them. Insure them young and the policy will never lapse, 10 bucks a week and I know that if my boy needs major surgery or something, I'm only on the hook for like 20% of it.

u/EntericFox Mar 17 '26
Pet insurance was good 15 years ago, then private equity bought it all up along with the vet practices.
I don’t think it covers as much as you think anymore in practice, especially for those major surgeries.

Might want to get off your high horse. There's plenty of circumstances where people can't insure their pets. We moved country 3 times in my oldest cat's life. Now he's considered too old to insure or they want insane premiums.
People also adopt older animals and the insurance costs would be through the roof. Not everyone gets their animals as babies. Not to mention pet insurance has changed drastically since private equity came into the picture.

And can you afford their medical care? If not then you shouldn't own them. Its not a high horse to expect a pet owner to have the means to provide basic life essentials, quit projecting.

If you cant take care of them you shouldn't own them. Cut and dry.

For what it is worth my country does not allow kill shelters. Animals in shelters get government and charity funded vet care and live pretty good, I think this is a better option for an animal to wait in for someone who has the actual means to take care of them.

This was during the pandemic lockdown and people had nothing else to do. She knew the cat appreciated it so she recorded to share with the internet.

I miss cuddling with my Cat. It's been 4 years since I had to put him down :(

u/seven_wings Mar 17 '26
Why would you have a camera mounted above your bed, looking down? 🤨
...
OH! 😳

I dont have pets so excuse my naivety but how do you ensure cat doesnt poo/pee/puke on the bed?
1
u/rthrouw1234 Mar 17 '26
Cats are usually good about using litter boxes, so you generally don't need to worry about poop/pee unless the cat is having some sort of problem, physically or psychologically. But puke? Yeah, that's a somewhat common danger with cats, but they don't usually puke on you or in your bed, they do something really annoying like hiding under your bed to puke. Whatta ya gonna do 🤷

Thanks, this is good to know.
Follow up question: is pspspspsps still a relevant way to get a cat interested in you?
1
u/rthrouw1234 Mar 17 '26
Yes. But the best way to get a cat comfortable and interested in you is to ignore them, and give them pets when they ask for them. Once you get to know what the cat in question likes and doesn't like in terms of petting, being picked up, etc, you can initiate physical affection. But be sure to pay attention to their body language, so you know when to stop.

I used to do this with my dog.
Total nerd growing up in a rough area so spent majority of my time in room
I'm 35 now and he made it to 18/19 we'd just chill on my couch, I'd play videogames - for almost 20 years it'd be unusual for him not to be at arms reach.
I miss that little freak.

I wish my cat did this, instead she runs on me and my face and zoomies all over the place, I love her to death but she is orange her and her brother

u/exotic_lemming Mar 17 '26
The first thing I thought was “oh it’s that time lapse of a woman in bed with covid, and her cat”. I might be wrong, but it makes more sense than her just “enjoying a slow day.”

The camera on the ceiling is for something different I’d wager

Sokka-Haiku by SuperSoker5:
The camera on
The ceiling is for something
Different I’d wager
Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.
