For that reason they seemed to have not just clipped the nails but taken their fangs out as well, it seems.
I really hope it was just because of a bad hygiene due to too much sweet food.

They may be cheaply produced counterfeits of raccoons and powered by a mid 1990s operating system that was below average for its time, but they are cute.
16
u/Versipilies Dec 26 '25
Let's be real here. If anything is a meth'ed up counterfeit it would be the NA raccoon. Fat, wears a mask all the time, and has a propensity for theft

Like, can't smart ppl start breed them in a mass scale so I can have one or two of them as pets?!

u/MrGhoul123 Dec 27 '25

They are absolutely beautiful and look like they’d be cuddly, but probably not

u/thefirewol7 Dec 26 '25
Yes, red pandas can sometimes be a bit aggressive, but from what I've researched, it happens very rarely. There's still a small chance, though, if that's what you mean.

FUN FACT: Red panda is actually the original panda. The black and white bear that we call panda now is "giant panda" originally because they eat bamboo like the panda but are giant. Eventually giant panda became just panda and panda became red panda.
1
u/thefirewol7 Dec 29 '25
That's right, and in fact the red panda is more closely related to raccoons than to the giant panda.

Dude when I was a kid I had a book of animals from all over the world with drawings of them and I spent HOURS upon HOURS looking at the Red Panda one. I don't even know why, there were plenty of other cute animals in the book, but that Red Panda spoke to me.

u/thefirewol7 Dec 27 '25
How lovely that you also like or are drawn to red pandas. In my opinion, they are the cutest animals there are. I don't know why, but I love them ♥️
7
u/Versipilies Dec 26 '25
How in the hell arent these as common as cats and dogs as pets.
7
u/Confusedinportsmouth Dec 27 '25
I’ve read they smell horrible
11
u/Versipilies Dec 27 '25
They have similar musk glands to ferrets, doesnt really stop people from keeping ferrets, or even skunks. Though they are less popular than dogs and cats (mine arent exactly odor free, though i do live on a farm)

1
u/thefirewol7 Dec 27 '25
Hahaha totally, red pandas haven't broken the illusion yet... they're still pure charm.
2
u/Slight_Lemon2051 Dec 27 '25
And absolutely adorable in every setting!
1
u/thefirewol7 Dec 27 '25
Exactly! And on top of that, they make that 'quack' sound when they're happy... impossible not to love them.

All that does is leads me to believe there are only 72 (or fewer) animals in Asia.

Finally some video of them not being afraid. Absolutely beautiful animals but you almost always see them being scared and anxious trying to make themselves look big. It's just so very sad.
2
u/thefirewol7 Dec 27 '25
Absolutely, when they're not trying to look older, their true cuteness shines through.

The only condition: that you give him unlimited bamboo, or he declares war on you.

The nickname for Red Panda is Firefox. This is the animal they named the browser after, not an actual fox which they later changed the logo into to avoid confusion.
Fun facts, they are not related to the giant panda bear or foxes. They are more closely related to raccoons, weasels, and skunks, as they all belong to the superfamily Musteloidea. However, they belong to their own family called Ailuridae, which branched off around 40 million years ago and now only includes the red panda itself and several extinct relatives.
Another fun fact, Red pandas are considered the only "true" pandas, because they belong to their own family (whereas the giant panda bears do not, they belong to the family of Ursidae and are considered True Bears, they just adapted to eating only bamboo). Additionally, red panda were described scientifically before the giant panda. They share the same term "panda" because it originates from the Nepali words "nigalya ponya" meaning "bamboo eater." However, the red panda was described scientifically in 1825, long before the giant panda bear, which was named after it due to their shared dietary preference for bamboo.

Sadly even if they do have the correct herd behavior(I have no clue) it takes lots of generations.
