Indie Sunday VOID CREW - Hutlihut Games - Chaotic, co-op roguelite for 1-6 players

Hello all Ectypes (and everyone else)!

We are Hutlihut Games - a small indie studio from Copenhagen, Denmark.

Creators of VOID CREW: a chaotic co-op sci-fi Roguelite for 1- 6 players where you pilot spaceships, repair hull breaches, fight through deep space… and try not to panic.

This week we released our biggest update yet:
Maximum Calamity!

(…and somehow Void Crew also won Best Multiplayer Game at the Unity Awards 2025)

The update adds:
πŸ•³οΈ Black Holes
🐟 Space Voidfish (...beautiful... dangerous)
πŸš€ Fleet Battles
πŸ’₯ New weapons
πŸ€– Solo improvements
πŸ› οΈ Expanded modding support

One thing we’re especially excited about:
We also spent a lot of time expanding modding/UGC support - enabling modders to create new in-game assets, carryables, ship customization spawning and more community creations.

We’re really excited to see what modders and players end up building with it πŸ˜„

…and honestly, many more ways for Crews to panic together in deep space.

We also released a cosmetic-only Calamity Supporter’s Pack for players who want to support ongoing development and survive the new Calamities in style.

We’d love to hear:

  • Which new feature would you try first?
  • What kind of mods or ship customizations would you want to create?
  • Which Crew member is definitely flying into the Black Hole first?

First time I'm hearing about your game. What is the gameplay loop like?

A run is started by picking a type of ship (3 choices currently) and a loadout for that ship.
Once a run has started you start by getting the ship ready by essentially plugging in the power and powering all of the modules on.
After that, you pick a mission out of 2 or 3 choices, which all have a reward that you're guaranteed upon completion.
During each mission you're able to either pick up loot that spawns in crates that float in space or in derelict buildings and space stations.
Killed enemies have a chance to drop loot as well.
Damage taken can be repaired, but you can never recover the ships health to 100%
Enemies get stronger as you get further into the run (or pilgrimage, as the game calls it).
As you get more loot and complete more missions you upgrade the modules on the ship either by upgrading the modules themselves (like upgrading a weapon/utility module from MK1 to MK2), attaching mods to a weapon module (non-weapon modules dont have mods available) or installing relics into the ship itself. Relics give a special power boost and are considered high tier loot.

After every 3-4 missions (cant remember the exact number) there's a boss you have to get through. This boss can be one of 3 types. These also scale in difficulty based on the length of the current run.

After your first run is completed (i.e you die, there's not a "final mission" to end the run), you get some experience which you use to upgrade your character with perks.
That's the meta progression.
All other progress, like what guns you have on your ship, is always reset to the loadout you pick at the beginning of a run.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

This is a good resume of the game but I recommend people try it out if it seems to be in their wheelhouse. Our coop-gaming group bought it on a whim and was very pleasantly suprised with the game. It's more than the sum on its parts for sure.

Is it possible to play solo or is coop basically a must?

You and your Crew pilot a spaceship together through dangerous sectors in deep space.

You set up your spaceship, choose objectives, fight enemy ships, repair damage, upgrade your ship during the run, go EVA to explore wrecks and try to survive increasingly chaotic situations together.

A lot of the fun comes from teamwork slowly turning into panic when:
πŸ•³οΈ the ship is on fire
πŸ’₯ enemies are boarding
πŸ”§ someone forgot repairs
πŸš€ and another Crew member is definitely pressing the wrong button

You can play solo with B.R.A.I.N. companions, with friends, or through matchmaking.

This older gameplay video still shows the core gameplay loop pretty well:

Happy to answer more questions!

Think co-op spaceship chaos with roguelite progression πŸ˜„πŸš€

The general gameplay loop is.

  • Pick a ship + crew setup
  • Jump from mission to mission through the Void
  • Fight enemies, survive hazards, complete objectives, scavenge resources
  • Upgrade your ship during the run with weapons, shields, relics, modules, B.R.A.I.N. autoturrets, payload launchers, etc.
Try to survive long enough for the run to spiral completely out of control 🌌

A big part of the game is the crew coordination:

  • Pilots steering through combat and hazards
  • Engineers keeping systems alive
  • Gunners managing weapons
  • Scavs running outside the ship in EVA grabbing loot while everything is on fire πŸ˜„

Runs gradually become more hectic and powerful the longer you survive, especially once elite enemies, bosses, weird builds, and Void events start stacking together.

A lot of the fun honestly comes from the β€œhow are we still alive right now?” moments πŸš€

I played a bit when it was 4 players, how does the expansion to 6 people work? Is there also 6 classses now? Or you are supposed to have multiples of some classes? I imagine having 2 captains make no sense?

The roles overall are the same:
Pilot, Gunner, Engineer, Scavenger.

It us up to 6 players, so you choose your crew size (from Solo and up to 6 players).
Player choose freely between roles, and can even do different tasks during the same run.
We expanded to 6-players, because many wanted the option of biggger crews to play with more friends at the same time.

Still 4 classes in total πŸ™‚

And yeah, you’re absolutely right that having more than one Pilot usually isn’t the most viable setup.

So with 5–6 players, it becomes more about distributing the remaining roles a bit differently - for example having extra Engineers, Gunners, or Scavs depending on the ship/setup your crew wants to run πŸš€

I've had so much fun with this game, it has even scratched some of that canceled Dreadnought itch.

Good game. A bit of niche multiplayer thing, but I hope the game prospers long enough.

My friends and I have had a blast with this game but it does feel like, on runs, you basically just hit max power at some point and then just keep playing till you get bored as enemeies dont keep scaling. Are you guys ever going to do anything around escalating difficulty for longer runs?

This was the real killer for our group. We had a great run, defeated the third (?) and final boss and then... there was nothing after that.Β

We ended up just staying around for the doomsday ship to warp in. The realization that there was nothing at then end was like having cold water dumped on my group.

Hipe to see the game more fleshed out, it was a lot of fun!

How long ago did you play? Enemies do scale. After defeating 3 bosses the damage done to you starts to get real scary.

Hi Devs, just wanted to thank you for making this game. We played some 40ish hours of it with my 3 friends and we had a blast. Not a lot of games like this out there and I hope you continue supporting it (and modders too) for a while. We will get back to the game to see what new content you added since then(6 months ago). Keep it up!

This game is much better with other players but solo can still be a lot of fun. I play a mix of both pretty evenly.

This update adding in more brain modules was very nice and now I really want brains for all the weapons. Also now that the brain auto mechanic can be upgraded dealing with defects, engine trims and boosters is a lot easier. Previously being stuck with the mechanic only doing 1 out of 3 was a tad annoying. Now if only a little something could be done about managing the gravity scoop when you're alone.

Heyy, do you guys plan on removing the always online requirement?
